Zoom H1 Battery Drain? Zoom_H1_Handy_Portable_Digital_Recorder Forums are opening up with complaints about the new Zoom H1 having some serious battery drain issues. Just thought i’d post an article here to see what comments pour in. Supposedly there could be a bad batch of Zoom H1’s floating around with problem capacitors that will drain brand new batteries to almost nothing just overnight. By habit I always recharge my Eneloop batteries and use a fresh set in all my gear before a shoot. So this is something i’ve never noticed. I’ll have to grab a fresh pack of non-rechargeables to test this out myself on my units. I’m digging around to see what Samson or Zoom might have to say about this, and if it’s true, what will be done for consumers. If you’ve got any more information, fill us in with your comments below.

Zoom H1 battery & sound problem – Samson we have a problem here Sound Bag
I’ve recently noticed that my Zoom H1 drains the battery, even when it’s not turned on. But I just figured it was me, and worked around the problem by only putting batteries into the unit when I needed to use it. Then, this weekend, I was doing some sound tests, and inadvertently discovered an even more serious problem with my Zoom H1. As I was recording, I was listening very carefully to the noise floor of the device, and noticed a strange pulsing sound. It was worst with an external mic (like my Tram TR50 lav used to record the sample below). But in fact, I couldn’t get a clean recording out of it no matter what I tried, even with the built-in mics.
Here’s what it sounds like (pay close attention to the silence at beginning and end of clip).
Sounds like a helicopter hovering in the distance, with the woop-woop-woop of rotor blades cutting through what should be silence.
That was enough to send me to Google in search of an answer, and sure enough, I found a few conversations about the issue, but nothing definitive. So I emailed Samson, the maker of the Zoom H1, and and this morning, I got back this definitive email:
We are aware of an issue affecting a limited number of H1’s. If you are within the United States, please call customer service at 1-800-372-6766, 9am-5pm M-F EST.
They will issue a return authorization number and arrange to have a new, tested replacement sent to you.
This kind of customer service rocks: not only do they acknowledge the problem, but they immediately arrange for a swift resolution. Go Samson. I referred to this unit in another topic, but that topic meandered a bit and this information deserves to be highlighted.
I purchased the Zoom H1 in October and for my purposes it was basically unusable due to rotten battery life. I'd put a new battery in and it would work fine for as long as I required it on that occasion.
Then I'd put it down for a bit, and on switching it on again, the battery would be dead or close to.
I moaned and grumbled, then it let me down one time too many so I got on to Samson tech, and they admitted that a batch of Zoom H1's had gone out with some sort of defective "resistor." (Whatever the heck that is.)
So, they are replacing the unit, with one that has been refurbished or new.
The performance of the unit, I was fine with, and it will be very useful to me, these battery issues resolved.
I'm now trying out the H2, for which battery life seems just fine. Now, I just gotta sound good:)
My Zoom H1 handy recorder just developed a nasty new problem. I suspect there's nothing I can do about it short of replacing the device, since taking it somewhere for electrical repairs would be about as cost effective as taking your injured gerbil in for surgery.
Here is what I've observed.
I used it to record a practice session, and on playback, it sounded a lot like there was an alarm clock going off way off in the distance. The noise floor on the right channel was modulating in a distinct square-wave tremolo with a frequency of about two per second. The actual music being recorded was not affected, just the quiet hiss at the bottom. It occurs to me I should provide an mp3 sample, but I don't have the unit handy at the moment, so one will be forthcoming.
This only occurs on the right channel, and only when using the mics. Using the line-in works just fine. When I alter the settings (bit-rate/depth and file-format) the speed of the tremolo effect changes.
I really love the H1 when it's working properly. It really is so incredibly handy. But if the price I pay in exchange for its low price-tag is having to replace it frequently, that kind of changes things.
Anyway.... can anyone offer a suggestion prior to the device hitting the bottom of my refuse bin?
-------------------- Hi. My name is Joe, and I play the guitar.
Fixed it! Not sure exactly what was the problem, but it seems like something was loose, or crossed or something. I started recording with it, and was listening to the noise as I gently squeezed and twisted various parts of the unit. When I squeezed the mics a little, the problem just stopped! And now all works correctly. A bit disconcerting, and I'm thinking it may well resurface again. Here's part of that recording when it ceased... you can hear the problem at the beginning, and then it just stops. http://db.tt/rAiKuuK-------------------- Hi. My name is Joe, and I play the guitar.
